Nicholas Lochoff (4.1948) after

Fra Angelico (Florentine, 1400?-1455)
DOMINICANS RECEIVE CHRIST AS PILGRIM

Original (after 1438) in the Cloister of San Marco, Florence Fresco

A lunette from over the entrance from the cloister into the guest quarters, the original reminded friars to welcome guests and the needy as the two apostles welcomed Christ on the way to Emmaus (see Lochoff's reproduction of Duccio's painting of this scene in the Cloister). This and the other frescoes from San Marco here reproduced were functional in their settings. The monks were continuously reminded of the duties and attitudes that were a required part of their behavior. That this period's art was meant to induce contemplation and have meaning for the viewer is evident in these paintings.
