Book of Hours

GOSPEL READINGS

The Gospel readings in the Frick Book of Hours follow the standard arrangement in Books of Hours beginning with John followed by Luke, Matthew and Mark. The readings are those used during the Mass on four major feasts: Christmas Day (December 25), the Annunciation (March 25), the Epiphany (January 6), the Ascension (movable feast). The first reading is John 1:1-14, which beginsIn principio verbum...In the beginning was the word...setting the stage for the story of redemption. Luke 1:26-38 is next, with the story of the angel's annunciation to Mary. Matthew 2:1-12 with the birth of Christ and the visit of the Magi. Mark 16:14-20 with the story of the Ascension and the commissioning of the Apostles to go out and preach salvation.
