Book of Hours

Office of the Dead

Usually the miniature preceding the Office of the Dead depicts the process of praying the Office, with three or four monks standing around a lectern in the chapel near a draped coffin.  However in the Frick Book of Hours, that section opens with an image of the Dance of Death in which we see two skeletal figures leading a Pope in front with the tiara, an emperor in the pointed crown, a king, a queen, a cardinal  wearing a red hat, followed by a group of individuals.
