SUFFRAGES TO THE SAINTS

The Frick Book of Hours contains responsive prayers or suffrages to six universally popular saints: Michael, James, Christopher, Sebastian, John the Baptist and Catherine. The saints are depicted in scenes readily recognized by their medieval audience, e.g. we see St. Christopher transporting the Christ Child on his shoulder through the water. The suffrages include an antiphon, verse, response and a prayer.
 

F. 205r St. Michael killing the devil.	F. 205v St. James as pilgrim, with a  scallop shell on his hat.	F. 206v St. Christopher carrying the Christ Child across the water with a hermit in the background lighting the way with a lamp.
F. 208v The martyrdom of St. Sebastian.	F. 209v St. John the Baptist dressed in a  rough brown robe holding the Lamb of  God.	F. 210r St. Catherine with the tools of her torture and martyrdom, the sword and the spiked wheel.
