The  Abbot JohnCotes  Tomb
(located in a niche built to house the remains of Hugh Despenser)

The niche originally housed the remains of Hugh Despenser, the younger, Earl of Gloucester,  who was hanged, drawn and quartered in Hereford by King Edward II in 1326.  Three months later, Edward II was murdered in Berkeley Castle.  The niche now holds the Purbeck marble coffin of John Cotes, who was Abbot from 1328 -1347, and is inscribed  "johannes abba hujus loci "
