The Despenser Tomb

The tomb of Sir Hugh Despenser who died in 1349, and his widow, the Lady Elizabeth , who died ten years later. It consists of a  paneled base with trefoil arches. On the tomb are two recumbent figures carved in white alabaster. Above is a decorated canopy with four-tiered tabernacle work. Formerly, the tabernacle was painted with red, green and gold.

Hugh Despenser, wearing a helmet (bascinet ), a mail cover to chin and neck(camail ),
and the tight over jersey ( jupon ) NOTE : the figure of his wife, Lady Elizabeth in the background at 
the top, who died in1359. She is wearing the square headdress, characteristic of the time of Edward III
