This tympanum originally contained a mosaic commissioned by Abbot Suger that was subsequently replaced with sculpture. The present tympanum, showing the martyrdom of Saint Denis, was made in the nineteenth century. It is unclear whether the present subject is that of the original mosaic. A possible alternative is the Triumph of the Virgin. |
