INTRODUCTION TO MEDIEVAL ART AND ARCHITECTURE

Exercise Media and Iconography

First, review Units 51 through 59 either on this website or in the Library.

This exercise consists of six works of medieval art, each one on a separate webpage. Each page will have the work of art at the top.  You may click on this image to see a larger version of it

For each--What media is it? What is the subject matter? How do you know this? This exercise was aimed at testing your powers of observation as well as your factual knowledge.   It is important to train yourself to notice all the details shown in a composition since you may find that seemingly insignificant details help to explain the meaning of the scene as a whole.

Write your answer in the space provided.

Then click on the 'Answer' link to see the media identification and some suggestions on the iconographical and technical features.

If you are interested to know where the images come from, you can find identifiers in small letters on the answer page.  These are for information only, do not try to  memorize them.
