Definitions

Mosaic: Technique of decoration usually employed on walls, ceilings, apses, or floors, made of small pieces (tesserae) of colored stone, marble, colored glass, or glass enclosing gold leaf embedded in cement. Most frequently used in the Early Christian and Byzantine periods in the Mediterranean area. Occasionally found in northern Europe in later periods.

Tessera (plural: tesserae): Small piece of stone, glass, etc., used in making a mosaic.
