10-Giotto-Angel

Nicholas Lochoff (d.1948) after

Giotto di Bondone (Florentine, c.1277-1337)
ANGEL, detail of
MADONNA AND CHILD ENTHRONED WITH SAINTS AND ANGELS

Original (c.1310) in the Uffizi, Florence Tempera on wood panel

This is a copy of the angel from the left foreground of the high altarpiece for the Church of Ognissanti in Florence. The bright color is an attempt to suggest the painting's original condition. Giotto has given the angel as awe-struck expression not seen in other works of the time. The angel holds a vase of roses and lilies, attributes of the Virgin, before whom he kneels in the original.
