OUT OF TIME, OUT OF PLACE, OUT OF CHINA:
Reinventing Chinese Tradition in a New Century

October 1, 2004 through February 25, 2005
(closed December 13,2004 through January 5, 2005)

Curated by Josienne N. Piller

With Deng Xiaoping’s opening of China to the world in the late 1970’s, China has emerged as a powerful global force.  Chinese artists have responded to this new worldview with an outpouring of unprecedented and boldly experimental artwork.  Wenda Gu, Wang Mansheng, Xu Bing, and Zhang Hongtu are all Chinese-born artists, yet each now lives in New York City.  Each addresses questions of cultural identity and the power and perils of language and human communication, yet each engages in an ongoing dialogue with thousands of years of Chinese history.
