From
Pavement to Paradise:
The Evolution of Schenley Plaza
September
15 through October 21, 2006
Schenley
Plaza has been the focus of numerous schemes and dreams since
the early 1900s, when Oakland began to develop as Pittsburgh’s
cultural center. The site underwent an unlikely transformation
from a woodland habitat to a municipal dump to a grand entranceway
into Pittsburgh’s first great urban park, only to become
swallowed later by asphalt and cars. This exhibition tells the
story of the plaza’s evolution into what is now a major
new work of urban landscape architecture. By revealing changing
ideas about the function of public space and the role of ecology
in the city, the story is richly significant not only for Pittsburgh
but for cities everywhere.
