The exhibition Revolution, Ritual, and Remembrance: The Art of Haiti encompasses over 60 paintings, decorative flags, and sculptures featuring the rich history and contemporary life of the nation of Haiti. These paintings, flags, and sculptures have emerged from the heart of a country that rose out of the shackles of slavery to become an independent black nation. This exhibition illustrates the country?s struggle to survive through war, revolution, and great economic and political difficulties. The Haitian people fought for their freedom in the revolution of 1804 and gained their independence by means of the only successful slave revolt in the New World. Throughout the following centuries the nation passed under the control of many different forms of government culminating in Haiti?s present government headed by President Ren? Pr?val. He has promised peace and stability for the nation that has not seen much of either. The tumultuous events that have occurred throughout Haiti?s history have remained in the memories of its citizens and are expressed in many of the exhibition?s pieces.

Ritual and religious practices have also aided the people of Haiti through their struggle to keep their culture and nation alive. These practices have become a major component in Haitian art. Vodou is practiced throughout Haiti and has become a part of its culture. Ritual sacrifices and chants are used as a form of prayer for its practitioners, and in some cases such practices have become combined with Christian religious practices.

Yet despite their turbulent past and uncertain future, the spirit of the people of Haiti remains indomitable. In a country where trees and food are in short supply, Haitian artists depict lush landscapes and alluring images of abundant fruit and vegetables, as well as feasting and revelry. Colorful scenes of everyday life show a proud people whose courage and strength point the way toward a hopeful future.

The exhibition Revolution, Ritual, and Remembrance: The Art of Haiti draws from a number of private collections in the Pittsburgh area. These works have been brought together to create a show that provides a glimpse into the history and culture of Haiti. -Josienne Pillar
